The event will feature executives from area hospitals using OpenVista, our open source EHR derived from the VA’s VistA solution, who will discuss achieving Meaningful Use rapidly and maximizing federal stimulus funds. New Canaan-based Silver Hill Hospital CEO Sigurd Ackerman, MD, will be speaking on the hospital’s experience with OpenVista and how they’ve used the system to improve care consistent with Meaningful Use, even though Silver Hill is not eligible.

Abstract:
Our topic this month will focus on IT Security. We will hear from Mac McMillan, the National Chair of the newly-formed HIMSS Privacy and Security Policy Task Force, and Chuck Podesta, the CIO of Fletcher Allen Healthcare and also a CIO leader in CHIME, an Advisor on the Healthcare CIO Panel, and Board Member to VITL. We will hear a practical perspective on Information Security under Meaningful Use as McMillan and Podesta take a case study approach of a Virus attack to amplify the trends, issues, and challenges associated with data breach and safe harbor under HITECH.
We will also learn about the Task Force, which was established to bring together a group of industry thought leaders to support HIMSS’s formal response to new legislation and regulation, as well as to develop HIMSS policy position papers and tools that relate to healthcare privacy and security. Attendees will be brought current with the efforts underway at HIMSS nationally in the areas of privacy and security and have the opportunity to give their feedback to inform the national agenda.

WE ARE AT CAPACITY FOR THIS EVENT |
The U.S. is going through an enormous healthcare IT transformation. But the U.S. is not alone. Globally, countries around the world are making significant strides to improve healthcare through the use of healthcare IT systems, applications and infrastructure.
This session will highlight several current and future international I.T. trends taking place, as well as demonstrate examples of best practices taking place in national health systems and healthcare organizations from European and Middle East countries.
Specific trends in international Healthcare I.T. including cost controls, management of big data, security and I.T. collaborative Healthcare will be discussed from the UK's National Health System to the United Arab Emirates.
Q&A will follow to further discuss the differences between current US healthcare I.T. practices those of our European / Middle East neighbors.
